The Puli: A Distinctive DogPosted 1/23/2017
The Puli, often described as looking like a mop, is an energetic dog bred on the Hungarian plains to assist sheep herders. Pulik (the plural of Puli) have been at the side of Hungarian shepherds for more than 1,000 years. The breed nearly became extinct in the 17th century as a result of interbreeding with other shepherd dog breeds. However, the Puli burst back onto the scene in 1912 and was recognized by the AKC in 1936. Still considered a rare breed, with less than 150 puppies being registered by the AKC every year, these remarkable dogs are always a favorite in the show ring and as a family companion.
Corded Coat, Canine Companion
Perhaps the most unique trait of the Puli is his corded coat. These cords serve an important purpose, aside from making them the center of attention. Not only is it weather-resistant, it’s also wolf-resistant! The cords acted as a barrier and prevented biting wolves from penetrating anything critical. Instead of piercing the dog’s body, they would get a mouthful of hair!
While some Pulik still act as sheepdogs today, you’re more likely to find them in a show ring or on the family couch. Intelligent, energetic and highly athletic, the Puli makes a great family pet. Their desire to work makes them easy to train, and they love to be the center of attention.
Pulik have an average lifespan of 10‒15 years and can weigh between 15 and 35 pounds. The Puli is generally a healthy breed, made for the temperamental climates of the Hungarian plains. However, their unique coat does require some special attention to skin and coat care. Food formulas enriched with omega-3 fatty acids, such as EPA and DHA, can help maintain healthy skin and coat. Pulik can also be prone to eye infections if the cords around their eyes are not properly cleaned or become too matted. Potential owners take note though—the Puli is a rather difficult breed to groom. The cords on a Puli must be split down to the skin before the dog can be washed. After that, it can take days for the dog to fully dry!
